Hello. Welcome to my website. It started while I was in Europe for a semester, and I've kept it up since then. I'm now at the University of Chicago Law School, living in Hyde Park, and the story continues. If you want to say hi or visit me, email cfloyd at uchicago dot edu.

Know what I hate? End-of-the-year countdowns. They blow. Yeah VH1, I'd LOVE to tune in and see the top fifty shitty 80s trends ever. That would be cool. And nothing better than NFL's 20 hardest hits of 2003.
Actually, there is very little better than the NFL's 20 hardest hits of 2003. Ouch.

Not much news here. To recap the last few days:
On Christmas Eve we went to my parents' new church, St. Peters. There was a very cute Christmas play put on by the children. But I started feeling crappy that evening, and by 4am I knew I was sick. I had fevers and chills and all kinds of sneezing and nastiness. I woke up at 8 to open presents and was back asleep by 11. Basically I slept away most of Christmas day. Hooray for the holidays. But I got some nice gifts: an OU sweatshirt, a crockpot, a cookbook, and a new wallet, among other things.
By late in the next day I was feeling much better. Apparently it was just a severe cold, not the flu. I felt good enough to go bowling with extended family and then go to the bar and see all kinds of high school friends I hadn't seen in ages. It's always good to hear what's going on with people and their lives. It's kind of sad to realize you don't necessarily give much of a shit. Prelude to the ten-year reunion I guess.
Then last night a fraternity buddy got married to his high school sweetheart. It was a nice wedding. Half of the fraternity guys there showed up to the church kind of drunk (not me, I'm still recovering from being sick). But they behaved, and were calmed by the fact that everybody else was sober. Of course, the reception took care of that later. Good stuff...way too many "Old School" references to count. The reception was really a great time. Not exactly the crazy party that many expected, but just a time to celebrate for Adam and Nicole and eat free food and drink free beer. And check out the bridesmaids. Gotta love the bridesmaids.
Today I'm headed back to Norman to pick up my books and bookshelf and spend the night, then it's back to Dallas for three more job interviews. I'll be back in Tulsa on the 30th.

I spent the weekend in Norman, and went to Dallas yesterday for my first job interview. Being in the old college town reminded me of how much I miss it. Dallas was cool. I may be there this summer.

My nice twelve day break from the blogging is over.
In the time I've been away, plenty has happened. I finished up my first round of exams Friday with Elements of the Law. The Dow went over 10,000. My boy Jason White of the Oklahoma Sooners won the Heisman Trophy. And in The Mother of All Good News, we caught that wiener dictator Saddam in a hole in Tikrit. That put me in a good mood. I'm already planning a street party for when we get Osama. I want to be filmed celebrating on a street corner with a big flag-waving group and beamed around the world, just like those Arabs in Dearborn, Michigan were for Saddam. (see Jordan's blog for more on "that little girl.")
So now I'm home in Tulsa. It was nice to get back. I knew I was home when I heard people say "please" and "thank you." And when people let me in when I signaled a lane change. And when there were more than one country music stations on the radio.
I enjoy sitting around doing nothing. But that gets old after a few minutes, so I've been looking into other idle activities. Some I've found: sleeping, waking up, drinking coffee eating cereal, scratching my belly, showering, flexing in the mirror, experimenting on how best to style my thinning hair, dressing, turning on the TV, petting the dog, typing emails, and drinking more coffee. I also have looked into driving around, finding coffee shops, drinking coffee, reading magazines, and shopping. Good stuff.

The semester's over and exams are coming Wednesday and Friday. People are pretty intense about studying for these first exams. There's a fair bit of anxiety, like I said before.
A typical conversation at the law school library:
"Howsit goin."
"Ehhh."
"Eh?
"Mmmm."
"Yeah, I hearya."
"Yep."
"Well goodluck. Better get back to it."
"Me too. Later."

It's the end of my day. Things are slightly stressful around the law school. Everybody's preparing for exams, and tension fills the halls and library. But it's a productive tension...not necessarily oppressive. I imagine it gets worse as exams draw near. I'm tired of worrying. I can't be bothered to be scared. So I'm just trying to get my shit together in as competent a fashion as I can.
Question is, what is competent? In college I used my natural ability to disguise my natural laziness. Sometimes things come easier to me than to the average Joe, so I used to fall back on that instead of actually putting effort into things. I got away with procrastination and loads of BSing. Now, though, I am surrounded by people who all get things quickly. So now, in order to continue to do above average work, I have to combine the thinking God made easy for me with a drive He didn't, and see what happens. Damn...no more slacking for this here nerd.

Couldn't sleep. Found a good New York Times article on the home state and decided to steal it. Enjoy.

Some people in the library wear earplugs so they can focus better. I don't know; maybe they get easily distracted by every little noise, but it seems like overkill to me. Of course, you'll probably catch me in a month with earplugs in. If you do, please smack me around a little and tell me how silly I look and how I'm taking things too seriously.
